The main reason of our visit to Montreux was to discover the Chillon castle, a medieval castle built on top of a giant rock in the borders of the Leman Lake. Not only is the castle in excellent shape, from the structure to the interior decorations, but also the museography is so good that to walk through it constitutes a true and pleasant introduction to castelology.

The castle was built in the XIIth century and was occupied by the Savoyards, the Bernese and the Vaudois, each one leaving its own mark upon the building. In fact, when you go through it, it’s very easy to understand that it started as a tower on top of a hill, it became surrounded by walls, they added towers to those walls and it ended up in the state it’s in. However, it must be said, it also has some inventions from the XIXth century renovations. The different rooms and its functions are also very clear: from the bedrooms, the reception rooms, the private areas to the chapel that I absolutely loved.

As you would expect from any important monument, it has inspired many famous people. Lord Byron wrote his name somewhere in the castle but I couldn’t find the inscription and he wrote a poem called “The Chillon prisoner”, Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote a story that takes place in here and Victor Hugo was fascinated with the castle. Naturally, it is one of the most visited monuments in Switzerland.
