Hamburg

My German friends explained to me that Hamburg is one of the most expensive and most chic cities of all Germany. And it has some good reasons to be that way: divided by a river with a very active harbor, it somehow manages to maintain its industrial activity while being surrounded with super modern and attractive buildings. I liked them all so much I wanted to take pictures of each one of them. The only fly in the soup was the unfinished Philharmonic auditorium by Herzog & de Meuron.

During our trip we stayed at Sven’s sister’s apartment; Sven is Esther’s rommate. This was heaven on Earth for rockers as well as for cats, both finding everything they need to be happy in just one place: metal bands posters, fluffy wall, CDs, stuffed mice hanging from the furniture, a carpet on the entrance with “Anti hip-hop zone” written on it, etc. In more than one occasion we went to “Night light”, the metal bar near the apartment, to have a drink and enjoy the pre-Wacken ambiance, the metal festival organized each year just a few hours from the city. It must be said that we were in a really strategic place: less than a block away from the main avenue of Hamburg’s red zone and very near the only street where women cannot enter.

We walked a lot in the docks and we walked in the first tunnel built to cross the Elba River. On the other side we sat while having a beer and we interrogated poor Sven on what men really look for in a woman. That’s the downside of traveling with three girls

After a long time we finally got to meet with Sophie and Fabi. We had breakfast together at a restaurant where everything was delicious but certainly very greasy since the main dish is pork; we went to a market where I bought sausages for my father that I later forgot in Bordeaux; we were on a ride on a boat and we visited the Event Horizon.

It was in Hamburg where we saw the latest Batman movie, in a very nice cinema, at eleven o’ clock at night. We got out at two in the morning, starving, so we bought a kebab and ate while walking back home.

We couldn’t leave without walking in the city’s center, looking to fulfill our shopping impulses, alas without release in my case. We still had one last stop before coming home where we would meet Sven’s family.
